Welkom

Shoma is in 2005 als stichting opgericht en heeft als doel (wees)kinderen in de omgeving van Rubya (Tanzania) naar school te laten gaan. De stichting werkt met uitsluitend vrijwilligers, zowel in Nederland als in Tanzania. Er gaan inmiddels ruim 200 kinderen naar school dankzij de hulp van Shoma. Totstandkoming Stichting Shoma

Bezoek Rubya 2004.

In augustus bezocht een groep Nederlanders Rubya, gelegen in noordwest Tanzania. Dit in verband met de bruiloft van Frank Bigirwamungu, geboren in Rubya en Marloes Bargeman, Nederlandse. Zij ontmoetten elkaar in 2000, toen Marloes in het ziekenhuis van Rubya een co-schap liep. Het contact bleef en sinds 2002 wonen zij samen in Nederland. In augustus 2004 trouwden zij, zowel in Nederland als in Tanzania en werden naar Rubya vergezeld door een groep familie en vrienden.

 

Feest in Rubya.

Rondom de bruiloft verbleef de groep uit Nederland bij familie en vrienden van Frank in Rubya. De ontvangst was meer dan hartelijk en de groep werd nauw betrokken bij alle voorbereidingen voor het feest. Geweldig om te zien hoe de hele gemeenschap meewerkte om voor ongeveer duizend gasten eten en drinken te verzorgen! Dit alles met ingrediënten van eigen land en koeien en geiten van de eigen veestapel. Voor de Nederlanders natuurlijk een fantastische ervaring om dit te mogen meemaken, maar ook een voorbeeld van de afhankelijkheid van de landbouw en de (mede daardoor) kwetsbare situatie van de mensen daar. Men wist er met bescheiden middelen een geweldig en onvergetelijk feest van te maken!

 

Oprichting Stichting Shoma.

Binnen de groep Nederlanders ontstond het idee om de plaatselijke bevolking te steunen. Bij overleg met mensen ter plaatse werd aangegeven dat één van de problemen is dat veel kinderen niet naar school kunnen. Officieel is scholing gratis en de scholen zijn er wel, maar door verplichte bijdragen voor gebouwen, lesmateriaal en schooluniformen is het voor velen niet haalbaar.

Het leek dus een goed idee om met hulp aan de lokale bevolking te beginnen bij de ontwikkeling van kinderen. Bij terugkomst in Nederland zijn we begonnen met de oprichting van Stichting Onderwijsbevordering noordwest Tanzania (Shoma), waarmee we inmiddels al heel wat kinderen naar school hebben geholpen.

Waarom Stichting Shoma

Shoma betekent 'onderwijs' in het Kihaya, de voertaal in de provincie Kagera in Tanzania. Voor veel kinderen in deze regio is het niet vanzelfsprekend dat ze naar school kunnen gaan. Omdat onderwijs de basis legt voor een betere toekomst wil Shoma juist deze kinderen ondersteunen. Hierdoor krijgen ze de kans zich verder te ontwikkelen. Indirect worden hiermee andere problemen, zoals armoede, kinderarbeid en slechte toegang tot gezondheidszorg aangepakt. Ons doel is dan ook om kansarme kinderen naar de basisschool te laten gaan met een eventueel vervolgtraject in het voortgezet onderwijs. Wij concentreren onze steun op een dorp in deze provincie, namelijk Rubya. Verdere informatie met betrekking tot de achtergronden hiervan vindt u op onze website.

Het leven in en om Rubya

Rubya is een dorp in het noordwesten van Tanzania. Het ligt vlakbij het Victoriameer.

De bevolking leeft voornamelijk van landbouwproducten. Koffie en maïs worden verbouwd voor de verkoop, overige producten zijn voor eigen consumptie. Dit is een kwetsbare situatie, omdat men volledig afhankelijk is van de oogstopbrengst en van de wisselende prijzen op de internationale markt.

Ook speelt in dit gebied de ziekte HIV/AIDS een steeds grotere rol. De toegang tot noodzakelijke medicijnen is er nog onvoldoende, waardoor er een grote groep weeskinderen bestaat.

Het onderwijssysteem in Tanzania

Een schoolcarrière in Tanzania begint met 2 jaar voorbereidende school (kleuterschool), waarna een kind 7 jaar naar de lagere school gaat.

De middelbare school kan 4 jaar gevolgd worden met aansluitend een middelbare beroepsopleiding, of 6 jaar met daarna een HBO- of universitaire opleiding.

  • De lagere school is in principe gratis. Echter, er worden wel verplichte bijdragen gevraagd voor onder andere schooluniformen, lesmateriaal en onderhoud van gebouwen (€35,- per jaar). Voor veel gezinnen, en met name voor de weeskinderen, is dit niet op te brengen
  • Voor de middelbare school geldt hetzelfde, waarnaast ook lesgeld betaald moet worden (€150,- per jaar).
  • De beroepsopleidingen zijn, ook al wordt er gewerkt met studiebeurzen van de overheid, voor de meeste mensen te duur.

    • Organisatie Shoma

    Shoma wordt gerund door uitsluitend vrijwilligers, zowel in Nederland als in Tanzania (op de foto een deel van de Tanzaniaanse vrijwilligers). De bezoeken die aan Rubya gebracht worden zijn ook allemaal op eigen kosten.

    In Nederland wordt de stichting vertegenwoordigd door een bestuur bestaande uit vijf leden.

    Ter plaatse wordt Shoma vertegenwoordigd door Angella Bigirwamungu, Dorothea Laurenti en Helga Johnson Mbeikya. Zij hebben nauw overleg met de hoofden van verschillende scholen en zorgen voor de aanschaf van schooluniformen, het lesmateriaal en voor het betalen van het lesgeld. Zij leggen hierover verantwoording af aan het bestuur in Nederland. Tevens rapporteren ze regelmatig over de vorderingen van de leerlingen.

    Bijna alle lasten van de stichting (bijvoorbeeld notariskosten, drukwerk) worden gesponsord. Op deze manier komt een zo groot mogelijk deel van het geld daadwerkelijk bij de kinderen in Tanzania terecht.

    Hoe kunt u helpen?

    Donateurs zijn voor stichting Shoma onmisbaar. U kunt onze stichting steunen door middel van periodieke of éénmalige giften. Voor 35 euro per jaar kan een kind een heel jaar naar de basisschool! We streven zoveel mogelijk naar continuïteit, zodat kinderen die eenmaal zijn begonnen aan een opleiding deze ook kunnen afronden.

    Shoma is een "Algemeen Nut Beogende Instelling" (ANBI), wat betekent dat giften aftrekbaar zijn voor de belasting. Shoma staat bij de belastingdienst geregistreerd als "Stichting onderwijsbevordering Noord-West Tanzania", met als vestigingsplaats Enschede.

     

    Twee keer per jaar worden onze donateurs via een nieuwsbrief van de vorderingen van de kinderen en onze plannen op de hoogte gehouden.

    Foundation Shoma was founded in 2005 with the aim of getting orphaned children in the area of Rubya to school. The Foundation works exclusively with volunteers both in the Netherlands as well as in Tanzania. Currently there are more than 200 children going to school thanks to the financial and material assistance of Shoma.

    A Group of Dutch people attended the weeding of Frank Bigirwamungu born in Rubya to Marloes Bargeman, born in the Netherlands. They met each other when Marloes was doing internship at the Rubya Hospital. They have now been living together in the Netherlands from 2002. In 2004 they got married in the Netherlands as well as in Tanzania and many of their friends and family joined them in Rubya in the festivities which followed

     

    The ceremonies in Rubya

    During the wedding ceremonies, the whole Group of the friends and families stayed with Rubya. This gave them the opportunity to witness firsthand the African hospitality and traditions. It was fabulous to witness the preparations for a ceremony for roughly a thousand people who were to eat and drink and enjoy the ceremonies to follow. This included food from the farms and meat from the goats and cows which are kept locally. For the Group this was unique but then it made them realise how independent people in Rubya were to farming. It was humbling to see how people can make such a feast with little resources; moreover it was a wedding ceremony to remember!

     

     

    Establishing the Foundation Shoma

    It was during the stay in Rubya that the Group Dutch friends got the idee to help the local people. During the deliberations with the local people, it perspired that one of the major problem was that lots of children were not going to school. Officially all the primary education is free of charge but due to the fact that schools still ask extra fees for something like the buildings exercise books and uniforms some children are unable to get the education.

    It was thus decided that to help this local community the best way was to make sure all the children who are not able to go to schools. Upon arrival in the Netherlands, the Foundation Shoma was established under the name "Stichting Onderwijsbevordering noordwest Tanzania" with which many children have now been enjoying education.

    Why Foundation Shoma

    Shoma betekent 'onderwijs' in het Kihaya, de

    Shoma means "education" in kihaya which is the vernacular of the Kagera Province in Tanzania. For a lot of children education is a privilege and many cannot afford to attend school.

    Due to the fact that education is the foundation for a better future, Foundation Shoma was set up with the aim of getting these children to school. This of course eliminates things such as child labour and of course the illiteracy is being fought in this way. The aim too is to enable these children to get the primary education and those able to pursue higher studies. Our assistance is concentrated on the village named Rubya.     Life in and around Rubya

    Rubya is a village siuated in the northwest of Tanzania in the vicinity of Lake Victoria.

     

    The local community is dependent on the farming. Coffee and Maize are cashcrops and the remaining products are for their own consumption. This of course is a delicate situation because people are dependent on the varying prices of the world markets.

     

    In this region the HIV/AIDS is also rampant. People do not have adequate access to health care whereby the number orphaned children continue to rise.

    Education system in Tanzania

    The education system in Tanzania is as follows:

    Education begin with 2 years of preschool where after 7 years of primary education.

    After the primary education follows 4 years of ordinary secondary education which can be coupled with a diploma certificates which have ranges of 2 to 4 years.

    There is also advanced level of secondary education which takes 2 years after completion of ordinary level of secondary education. Thereafter university courses can be followed having with a duration of three to six years depending on the degree course.

     

    The primary education is officially free of charge but due to the fact that some fees are payable such as for the upkeep of buildings and studying materials (roughly €35,00 per year). This amount is way too much for orphans and some of the families in Rubya.

     

    For the secondary education is the same only that some other expenditures are significantly higher (€150,00 per year).

     

    The higher learning institution are available and if lucky there are student loans available but not to all. The costs for higher learning institution are much higher and for most of the people also too expensive.

    Organisation of Foundation Shoma

    Shoma is being run exclusively with the aid of volunteers in the Netherlands and as well as in Tanzania (see foto with some of the volunteers in Tanzania). Also the visits to Rubya by our volunteers from the Netherlands are not paid by the Foundation.

     

    In the Netherlands the Foundation is represented by a committee of five members.

    Locally we have Dorothea Laurenti, Helga Johnson Mbeikya and Angella Bigirwamungu who represent Shoma. They meet the local head teachers and make sure uniforms and school materials are bought and made locally under their supervision. They report their progress on how the children are doing and give financial reports to the committee in the Netherlands.

    All our running costs such as annual financial reports and the leaflets are sponsored. In so doing we keep our running costs at a minimum and maximise on the number of children who can be sponsored to go to school.

    How can you help

    Donors are very essential for Foundation Shoma. You can help our Foundation by giving a single donation or on a regular base. For only €35,00 you can have a child enjoy primary education for a whole year! We try to have some continuity in our assistance to the children such that once a child is in our program he/she will be assured of continued financial and material assistance.

    Shoma has been registered by the relevant authorities in the Netherlands known as ANBI, which means any donations are tax deductable. It is registered under the name "Stichting onderwijsbevordering Noord-West Tanzania", with it's headquarter in Enschede.

    Twice per year all our donors are briefed via our newsletter on different activities and also the progress of the children in schools.
